We are all 'experts'.

I have often said how great the support is that I get from people who read this blog and follow my facebook page. I great fantastic support from friends and family also. But just lately I have been getting a few comments that rub me the wrong way.

I have been told a couple of time lately not to take things too seriously. And that I put too much pressure on myself. I really don't think this is the case at all. Do I get disappointed when I gain weight? Of course I do. Who wouldn't. Do I avoid going out and having a good time? No I don't. Do I watch what I eat and drink when I go out? Of course I do.

It's the 18yrs of NOT caring about what I eat and drink that got me into this situation. At the start of the year I made a commitment to myself that in 2013 my health and fitness were going to come first. This isn't something that can be done half hearted. Trust me I have tried that before and clearly it doesn't work.

I am tired of people telling me that I still need to have fun and 'live'. I know this! And I am trying to work my way through it. But I can't just eat & drink what I like. This weekend is the perfect example. I played 5 games of hockey in 3 days and I made reasonable food choices. Definitely better choices then I would have made in the past. I did drink and go out. I did eat a few things I shouldn't have. And I gained 800grams. I know that it could have been soo much worse. I am not beating myself up about it. I am learning from it and moving on.

One of the things that annoys me the most is when I get constant 'advice' from people who are either overweight or have never been overweight themselves. I have someone in my life who constantly tells me what I 'should' be doing. What I 'should' be eating. I have lost 18kgs in 6 months. I am going to keep doing what I am doing because clearly it is working!

I am also getting a lot of people ask me what my goal weight is. So to put it out there it is 70kg. This would put me in the healthy BMI range. I also go on clothes size and would like to be a comfortable size 12. A lot of people tell me this isn't possible. More so when I tell them the weight I want to be. Why not??? Why can't I be as slim and as healthy as others?? It just takes commitment and support. I am committed and I have amazing support. It is just disappointing when the support doesn't come from the people you thought it would.

Rant over. I am geared up for a great week. I am starting to get organised for my half marathon at the end of September. I am running from our farm into town 21km to raise money for the local golf & tennis clubs to buy a defibrillator.

Like I said at the beginning of this post I love the support I get from everyone on my blog and facebook page. You are all what has made me get as far as I have. I honestly think that I would have given up by now had it not been for your support and well wishes.

How do you handle people who like to give 'advice' or knock you down??

  1. It's a hard one. I feel myself stopping giving advice to people because I know how much it annoys me, and a lot of people just don't understand the knowledge we have from doing a few rounds of 12WBT.
I know someone who wants to lose 10-15 kg in two months and is doing some beach belly diet :( it is so upsetting because I have tried to school them in a more 12WBT like nutrition plan...
I just say do what you want, you know what it was like being overweight, and you will get the results you want by sticking to the plan and not drinking (not being 'fun') and working hard.

    1. Thanks Chelsea, I am the same, have been trying to only give advice when asked. But like you say the knowledge we have you just want to share with everyone. I don't mind advice it's just when it has a negative undertone that it erks me.

Challenge the advice. By saying "Whatchootalkinaboutwillis? Nah, take what you think is relevant and discard the rest. Now... My advice is to make cakes and send them to me. So I can eat them. Do not send any to the ugly one though....

    1. Since you both look the same how can one of you be the ugly one???? I think Mark would have something to say if i start making you cakes when I don't even make them for him.

  3. I find that trying to live a healthy lifestyle labels it as boring by quite a few people. Apparently I've not lived unless I eat chocolate, have dessert, indulge in fast food, etc. if that makes me boring, so be it. I live chocolate but I can't eat it all the time - I have experienced the consequences! Even now people ask NNE will I go back to eating normally once the 12 weeks are up! I'm like what? I am eating normally - healthy, tasty, delicious small portions. Don't let them bother you. You know what you're doing and good on you with your progress so far!

    1. EXACTLY!!! I have people tell me that when I eat say Dahl that it isn't a meal it's a side dish. Well why can't it be a meal? And it's not boring it's what you make of it. That's why I am loving the 12WBT because of all the new recipes I am trying and loving. A lot of thing s I would NEVER have ever tried before are now my favourites.

  4. I feel your pain as I have started getting the ... "you wouldn't want to lose too much more would you" talks. Err yes I do, you've not seen me naked. Ha! I've also got the "how much do you weigh" questions. What kind of question is that? I would NEVER ask someone how much they weigh unless it was one of our 12wbt girls and we were having that kind of discussion. Why can't we have it all? Why can't we be like other people are? That doesn't make us shallow or self-centred.

You know you are doing what you need to do for you. Hold your head high. And know that no matter what goes on in the big wide world, your little corner of the web here is where we "get" you and understand you. Keep the faith.

  5. Carol,I get that too and it's annoying that people say, "When the 12 weeks is over..." as if that's the end of a fad. Well it's not - it IS a lifestyle change and one I am so glad I have made. Yes, when people say "Don't get too thin" they haven't seen me without my clothes on so they don't know there is unhealthy fat. So glad the people on this program are so supportive.
